ONE-ON-ONE COACHING

Our coaching is a holistic, body-centered approach to personal development that focuses on the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and emotions. Unlike traditional one-on-one work, which often centers on thought and behavior, somatic coaching helps clients access the "wisdom of the body" to facilitate lasting change.

When you are ready, contact us to set up a clarity call—we would love to connect with you.

The Core Principles:

Here is a breakdown of the work a somatic coach does with a client:

  • Mind-Body Connection

  • Embodied Awareness

  • Nervous System Regulation

  • "Bottom Up" Approach

Mind-Body Connection:

The fundamental belief is that our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are deeply intertwined with our physical sensations and bodily patterns.

The body holds a history of experiences, including stress, trauma, and emotional patterns, that can manifest as physical tension, posture, or chronic issues.

Embodied Awareness:

The goal is to help clients become more conscious of their physical sensations, movements, and postures in the present moment.

By tuning into these bodily signals, clients can gain deeper insights into their mental and emotional states.

Nervous System Regulation:

A key aspect of the work is helping clients learn to regulate their nervous system. Many people live in a state of chronic stress, often stuck in "fight, flight, or freeze" responses.

Somatic coaching provides tools to calm the nervous system, build resilience, and create a sense of safety and balance.

"Bottom-Up" Approach:

While traditional therapy or coaching might work "top-down" (from thoughts to feelings), somatic coaching uses a "bottom-up" approach, starting with the body to address and release emotional and psychological blocks.

Session Format

A somatic coaching session is a safe and supportive space where the coach guides the client through a process of embodied exploration. A typical session might include:

Check-in & Guided Inquiry:

The session often begins with a verbal check-in to understand the client's current state and intentions.

The coach might ask questions like, "What are you noticing in your body right now?" or "Where in your body do you feel that emotion?"

Somatic Exercises:

The coach guides the client through various body-based practices to facilitate awareness and release.

These exercises are often simple and gentle, focusing on the client's internal experience rather than external performance.

Reflective Dialogue:

As the client engages in the exercises, the coach facilitates a reflective dialogue to help them make sense of the sensations and insights that arise.

This process helps connect physical feelings to underlying thoughts, beliefs, or past experiences.

Integration & Grounding:

The session concludes with practices to help the client integrate their learnings and anchor the new state of being.

This ensures they can carry the benefits of the session into their daily life.

Common Techniques & Exercises

Our sessions incorporate a variety of techniques tailored to the client's needs. These may include:

Body Scanning:

A mindful meditation where the client systematically brings awareness to different parts of their body, noticing any sensations, tension, or emotions without judgment.

Breathwork:

Using conscious breathing techniques to regulate the nervous system, release tension, and connect with the body's natural rhythms.

Grounding Exercises:

Practices that help the client feel more present and stable by focusing on physical contact points, such as the feet on the floor or the body in a chair.

Mindful Movement:

Gentle, intentional movements (e.g., stretches, yoga poses, or even simple shaking) to release stored tension and increase bodily awareness.

Emotional Mapping:

Guiding the client to physically locate where different emotions manifest in their body (e.g., "Where do you feel anger in your body?").

Titration & Pendulation:

Techniques, particularly useful in trauma work, that involve gently moving between a distressing sensation and a neutral or pleasant one to process difficult experiences without becoming overwhelmed.

Savoring:

Reflecting on positive sensations or memories and fully experiencing them in the body to build a sense of calm and resilience.

By using these methods, our coaching sessions help clients move beyond intellectual understanding to create fundamental and lasting change, empowering them to live more fully and authentically from a place of wisdom.

Kathy Behrens, President, Social Responsibility & Player Programs, National Basketball Association (NBA)

"The NBA has had the good fortune to work with Jennifer Monness and the JLM Wellness across a number of our key platforms and events and each experience has been deeply impactful. Jennifer and the Lab have conducted on-site training sessions for a number of our departments, leading mindfulness sessions and helping to teach easy-to-use techniques to manage stress in the workplace. Jennifer also led a training session for our first-ever Women’s Leadership Conference and she was able to command the attention and focus of hundreds of people in one setting. Her approach and style truly lend themselves to any situation and she has a unique ability to get everyone comfortable and committed to the training. We also used Jennifer to lead a session at our first-ever Jr. NBA Global Championship event and she was able to once again command the attention of hundreds of young students and coaches from all over the world. Watching her find common language and understanding in that setting was an inspiring component of our event and one that was appreciated by all participants. Regardless of the setting, we have benefited greatly from working with Jennifer and JLM Wellness."
